An Inside View Of What Stress Is About – Part 2

What is stress about…from another view

The Matchbox Analogy

An Inside View Of What is Stress About - Part 2

This is another important view to consider of what stress is about through the analogy of a match box.

A matchbox stays intact and does not cave in, or bursts out (implode & explode), due to the fact that the pressures from inside and from outside are equalized.

Think of the workplace as a matchbox, while stress is the pressure exerted from outside, pressing in constantly.

The moment the pressure becomes too much, the holding patterns (Workplace) start to break down.

What this is saying is, that stress exerts pressure from outside and threatens to rupture the personal and organizational holding patterns.

How to relieve the stress from outside the box, is by causing pressure from inside that would equalize the outside pressure, that way the box stays intact.

Understanding what is motivation about and what is self motivation about is a key to equalize stress.

Applying motivational techniques in the workplace, and motivational strategies in the workplace, are essential ways to handle stress.

These Leadership Training Courses, provide new ways to understand what is stress relief.

The 7 Main Symptoms of Workplace stress

  1. Lack of usage of the power of positive thinking
  2.  Communication skills workplace, and, verbal and nonverbal communication, are in decline
  3. Performance information tools start to become dysfunctional, and people feel uninformed and in the dark.
  4. Performance tools start to erode, gradually diminishing the level of motivation workplace.
  5. Skillshare – the level of teamwork and skillshare drops. A suspicion-based workforce environment starts to form, where “each to their own” becomes commonplace.
  6. The level of productivity is in a free-fall.
  7. The great employee and top talent “migration” accelerates.

Effective Strategy Question 1: How to DEAL with the stress?

Deal = Discover, Examine, Accept, Learn

The focus here is how to relieve stress fast. The answer to the question “how to deal with the stress” is in the acronym of the word, as shown in the title.

The following verbs: Discover, Examine, Accept, Learn, which lead to the following results: Knowledge, acknowledgement, awareness.

To know how to deal with stress in the workplace, the first condition that must be met is to search for and Discover the presence of stress, and Examine its effects.

To arrive at the point where the fact of stress in the workplace and the effect it has on employees is no longer ignored or avoided, but rather fully Accepted & Acknowledged.

Employees must Learn about how to relieve stress from other people and from potentially explosive situations, as well as, how to reduce stress in a given period of time, when  the symptoms of stress in the workplace show up.

The awareness of “time is of the essence” where stress is concerned, is part of the knowledge, employees acquire and develop  through employee training development seminars and courses.

Symptoms of stress in the workplace are diverse and have a wide range of appearance which is another part of awareness that needs to be taken into account. Stress wears many “faces”, which is an important fact to be familiar with.

In trying to understand how to deal with the stress in the workplace, it is important to realize that stress tends to hide behind symptoms that are not so easy to detect.

At this level, we are concerned only with the symptoms of stress in the workplace. The causes of stress in the workplace are dealt with later, (when learning about skills of handling stress in the workplace).

It would be accurate to assert, that where stress is concerned, half the battle is won when awareness is achieved.

Effective Strategy Question 2: How to COPE with the stress?

Cope = Consider, Options, Place, Engage

How to cope with the stress, and more specifically how to cope with the stress in the workplace, is a defensive measure. It requires stress coping strategies that reveal different ways of coping with stress, which include coping skills that serve as short-term solutions to reduce stress.

The acronym of the word cope explains its nature. To Consider the situation and weigh the Options of how to react from a defensive but more informed position. This is followed by a process of identifying the Place, where the symptoms of stress in the workplace show up, which leads to Engagement and usage of coping strategies.

So What Does This Mean Practically, In Terms Of How To Cope With The Stress?

Stress coping strategy focuses on understanding the symptoms of stress, while identifying ways of coping with stress, that include coping skills, which are ways to reduce stress.

Most people in the world try to cope with stress, without developing coping skills, which in the absence of coping strategy, only ever produces a low level coping response to stress.

This usually means, that when the same stress symptoms reappear, the same level of coping skills is applied, which is the “Fight or Flight” response mechanism.

It is important to have a list of coping skills within the stress coping strategies. These skills must be considered in light of past experience, to determine what fits in the present, from what has already been acquired, rehearsed and applied.

Coping skills are part of a defensive response strategy to stress, which considers available options.

This is a tactical, short-term approach, with pin-pointed efforts to cope with urgent stress symptoms that showed up that day, in order to reduce stress immediately. It concerns itself with the question “how to relieve stress fast” and looks for ways to relieve stress and take off pressure in the immediate term. In addition, there’s a process of symptom analysis, which places newly discovered ways to relieve the stress and catalogue them in the “map of symptoms”.

To cope is, to respond with the necessary coping skills, but only to the appearance of stress symptoms, not their cause. Furthermore, in answering the question “how to cope with stress” there’s an element of new knowledge that is acted upon without digressing to the level of dealing with stress. Further employee training development would be required to move towards a more proactive approach, which is, handling stress in the workplace.

The remainder of the 5 strategies will be found in the 3rd article on stress.
