This article will focus on the Creativity Mindset in an unusual way and will perhaps mark for you a paradigm shift of how to think about creativity in a way that is achievable by every person.
You will discover that creativity is only but a symptom of a range of attitudes forming behavioral patterns rather than a formulated “how to” set of instructions.
This article is addressed to people, professionals, and others who seek to constantly improve, every day of their life. Push back against limitations, and learn to believe in their own greatness.
Regardless of their status or occupation, every person in their own unique way has an untapped well of creativity within them.
Unfortunately, most people never tap into it because of how they think about themselves. And this is, most importantly, because of fears of all types that derail any possibility of creativity.
How To Think About Creativity
Creativity requires courage.
Courage to be able to absorb the many fears that stop a person. The kind of courage that persists despite limiting fears that suggest you can’t or you shouldn’t.
The courage that does not stop at the Stop Sign that fear posts.
Courage to unlock the creative treasures hidden within you that you may not even know about.
That’s the kind of courage that the Creativity Mindset needs, so that you may tap into your own well of genius.
For professionals, courage means to not only deal with their own fears but often with a business environment that frowns upon creativity.
Creativity needs an environment that seeks for, soft skills training. One that values the power of positive thinking and the empathy of Emotional intelligence.
So this article shifts the paradigm and claims that attitude is the first cause for Creativity, as we humans are already born creative.
Unfortunately, because of the kind of life we live, stresses we endure, we take our eyes off the real prize of life and the meaning of life and lose our creativity.
You don’t need to learn creativity but rather to rediscover the Creativity Mindset that you once had.
It is not an intellectual quest but a soul quest.
Creative Living
Creative living is your personal contribution to your own creative spark. You can’t expect to become creative if you don’t participate in your own success process.
The following 6 questions will help you understand the bigger picture of creative living.
Try to genuinely answer them…
- Does the way you live your life support creativity? In other words, are you a creature of habits or do you pursue the unknown of everything?
- Do you have an attitude that believes that you can find a rose in the desert or a needle in a haystack?
- Do you have the courage to stand up to what inside you says “you can’t” or “you shouldn’t”
- Do you still have the curiosity that propels you to your next personal revelation or to your next new piece of knowledge?
- Are you courageous enough to look at your fears straight in the eye and not flinch, and not stop at their stop signs?
- Are you offering creativity the space to come and join you and truly become part of your life?
These and other questions will point you to the direction of what the Creativity Mindset is all about. Without which no course or creativity training can be of any help.
Look at each question but I want you to pay special attention to question 6 because it humanizes/entitizes creativity and treats it as a living breathing thing that goes wherever it feels welcome.
It does! Why should it go to where it doesn’t feel welcome? Why would creativity visit a person who never tries new ideas because they are afraid of what others might think about them?
After all, Creativity nurtures new ideas. Expresses things in new ways, finds creative solutions to old problems, find new ways to express poetry or painting, or even negotiating.
It has expression in every field of life so it chooses carefully who it would join. Wouldn’t you?
Creative living is living in such a way that you are invitational to it by the way you live your life, think, be, and do.
Attitude & The Work Environment
One of the most important words in the dictionary is attitude….when the attitude is right, everything else lines up.
Where the Creativity Mindset is concerned it’s extremely significant.
It is best seen in the workplace, where if the attitude is right there’s Cohesive Teamwork, Strategic Thinking, Critical Thinking, Decision Making, Emotional Intelligence, Strategic Communication, and the whole thing works in sync.
Never perfect but much, much better than in an environment where lousy attitude prevails.
A change in attitude is the strategic key that will establish a business environment that will enable the Creativity Mindset.
The right attitude provides for the inner enlivenment and is the glue between different soft skills.
It is the most important catalyst in the Trio of Personal Effectiveness: Thinking, Emotions, Execution.
Attitude is a deep thing, it is in every human about everything, whether they are conscious of its presence or not.
It is the “Where They Come From” to do what they do.
It is the underline of what they truly want, not what they say they want.
When the attitude is positive, believing, thankful, happy, appreciative, it taps into the power of positive thinking. It opens the door for new possibilities and forms a bridge between the old and the new.
From my own personal experience whenever I have been asked by an organization to conduct creative thinking training I would always check what their mistake policy is.
That would for me be a telling indication. If the environment in the organization would have a home for creativity the leadership would encourage new ways of thinking at the price of mistakes.
If on the other hand, I would hear rediculous statements like “we have zero tolerance for mistakes” I would cordially opt-out from working with that organization. …and it has happened.
It’s simple, if people are afraid to make mistakes they won’t be creative. It has always amazed me how CEO’s fail to understand such a simple equation.
The 9 Requirements To Creativity Mindset
- Adapt courage as your close ally and keep fear at an arms distance
- Fall in love with the unknown all over again. You had it once so it’s there, just fetch it.
- Look at things differently. Have The New day Attitude – Look at every day as a new day and every opportunity as a new possibility
- A positive attitude can be likened to a moving escalator, it will carry you forward effortlessly…but you’ve got to get on the escalator.
- Don’t judge things – judgment is based on past ideas – instead, assess things by looking at the facts and adding them up.
- Beware of your comfort zones, they are your past luring you back.
- Learn to say ‘No’ to what was a habit and never give up the right to think for yourself.
- Do not stop at the Stop Signs that fear placed in every corner.
- Always consider the Now first, then and only then look backward… never the other way around.
When you decide, and you believe, and you have a real reason that is motivating you, you have got a winning attitude that will get you everything.
Finally
The mindset of Creativity starts with you and it’s a matter of what human qualities you bring to the table.
Creativity comes to the courageous, the curious & the one that is more in love with the unknown than their own fears.
In the workplace, it’s up to the leadership to lead by example and encourage creativity by treating people with respect. Not punishing them for mistakes and not trying to control everything.
Leadership that is effective delegates, trusts, monitors but never ever utters the words “we have zero tolerance for mistakes”- these are foolish words for someone who is not a leader but a dictator.
If You Change the way You Look at Things the Things You look at Change!!!
So keep looking at everything you see as if it is the first time and you’ll discover a great wealth of Mental Toughness and Emotional Intelligence in yourself.
Clearly, this article addresses the cause for creative thinking which is where you want to make a change. The rest will naturally fall into place.
